Ferrets

Sekmet
March 2000 - September 2006
The first "alpha male" and one of the first ferrets we owned.  An extremely clever little weasel, and by far the best alpha male we've ever had.  Extremely patient, but he really knew how to keep the others in line.  Even as he grew old and infirm, the others seemed to have a healthy respect for him.  When he died of cancer, we buried him with a Trisket, his favorite snack.

Apep
(March 2000 - February 2004)
My favorite ferret, Sekmet's sister.  She was a very sweet creature who actually enjoyed to just lay around and be cuddled.  Apep was very content to hang out with humans and get her belly rubbed, and she was the first to take in any new kits and show them around the house.  When she died unexpectedly of heart disease, we buried  her with a strawberry candy, her favorite sweet.

Wedjet
(April 2000 - June 2008)

Wedj had the distinction of being our "Peter Pan Weasel", because she never seemed to grow old and we often joked that she would outlive us all.  She lived to the ripe old age of eight, and right until the day before she passed away she kept her inquisitive and independent nature.

Amon-Ra
(September 2000 - November 2006)
"The Lucky White Weasel" because for the first two years you never saw him, and if you did it was a sign of good luck. Then one day he decided to be a friendly weasel and developed a taste for human beverages. Ra was the second alpha male, who waited all his life to be the next "boss" but then  succumbed to cancer after only a five-week reign. He was buried with a packet of instant cappuccino because he loved sharing a coffee with Duckie.

Set
(Sept. 2000 - May 24, 2007)
Amon-Ra's brother who has no desire to ever be alpha male. Despite his name, Set was a very cuddly and friendly ferret who loved to play with humans. He died from spleen disease with complications. Because of his passion for marinara sauce, we buried him with a can of tomato paste.
Nepythys
(February 2001 - February 2007)
Sickly little weasel who surprised us all by living to be six years old.  Nep developed a great fondness for toys, and she had several dozen of them throughout her life.  She knew each one and where it belonged, and was very meticulous about organizing them just so.  When she finally succumbed to disease, we buried her with her first and favorite toy, a plush cow.

Sebek
June 2001 - May 9, 2007
This was our wonder weasel girl, the cleverest of the bunch and a proven problem-solver. She was also a master of disguise and liked to change her coat color every year or so. This photo was taken when she was about a year old.  She and her sister Nut were our first rescues, being agressive and slated to be put down by a pet store.  Instead, we took them and worked with them, thus establishing our reputation for being ferret miracle workers. She was almost completely white when she died of cancer.  She was buried with her one and only toy, a duck-shaped flyswatter that she dragged around all the time.
Nut
(June 2001 - June 2007)
"The Peanut Butter Terror". Nut  (Pronounced "Newt") was our most aggressive ferret to date,  and of course that made her Duckie's favorite.  She could clear a room of cats and most people in less than 5 seconds if she got in her mood to.  With a lot of patience and love, she began to calm down when she got to be about five years of age.  At age six she developed a neurological condition that caused her to go into repetitious seizures. When medical solutions failed and the seizures became continuous, we realized we would have to have her put to sleep.  She died quietly in Duckie's arms, and we buried her with a toy cat.

Stitch

Early 2002(?) - Present

The only one who came to us with a name.  Stitch was another rescue that came to us through a friend who took him from a very neglectful owner.  To this day, Stitch craves human attention moreso than any other ferret we've ever had, and he'll leap out of the cage and onto a shoulder as soon as the door is opened.  Stitch is almost completely blind now, but he is still very friendly as soon as he catches the scent of a nearby human.

Geb
(Nov. 2002 - Present)
Our monster weasel.  Geb weighs about six pounds and is perfectly content to spend his life lazing around in his hammock.  When he does decide to come out to play, he likes to playfully nip in order to let you know he's there - then dive under furniture and make you chase him around.  He thinks that Duckie and dogs are delicious.

Hathor
(Nov. 2002 - Present)
This is Geb's sister.  She's not a really remarkable ferret except that she is an excellent fighter. After all, she spends a lot of time completely dominating her big brother.
Ba
(??? - 2004)
Ba was a little girl that we rescued from a terrible situation. We don't know much about her life up until the three years she was with us, but we think she was about 8 when she died from a sickness that hit the tribe in 2004. She was too old to recover.

Bastet
(Jan. 2004? - Present)
Bastet was a very serious rescue. We rushed across the state of Florida to the Tampa area  to collect her because she was about to be abandoned in the woods by a fellow who did not want to care for her. What makes her extraordinarily lucky is that a day later, Hurricane Charley hit the Tampa area as a catagory 3. We don't know her exact age, but she was still pretty young when we got her, so I'm guessing early 2004.
Nekbhet
(??? - Present)
Another rescue.  She's a beautiful ferret with burgundy eyes, but she's got a bit of a biting habit that we're slowly breaking her of.   She recently developed a hair-loss condition and has a bald patch right at the top of her head.  We frequently joke that she just found religion and nicknamed her "Monk".

Anubus
(Feb. 2005 - Present)
This is by far the feistiest ferret we've ever had. He went from being tiny to rivaling Geb in size within a year, and is now down to being an average male size and burning off calories like crazy because he just won't sit still. The others just find him incredibly annoying.

Neith

(April 2007 - present)
Neith is the first ferret we've gotten who was chosen by another ferret. Long story short, the ever-feisty Anubis needed someone young enough to be able to dominate. He went with me to the pet store, and he picked out Neith.
