This was a joke that the guys and I pulled together in about 24 hours. I was on the phone with a producer who had been pressuring us to get a short film done. We'd run into a few casting snags, and I was telling him what we were doing to remedy the delays. He responded with: "Okay, but if you send me something with sock puppets, I'm out!"
So I was up all night making sock puppets...
Believe it or not, there was a method behind the madness. In addition to giving one of our producers a good laugh when we sent it to him, it gave Garith the opportunity to play around with a new video editing program. ... and decide that he didn't like it!
But this project had a few firsts for me as well. It was the first time I used a blood rig for a puppet, which I did intentionally very poorly to enhance the joke. (Fortunately the producer knows I am well-versed in blood FX... or I'd be out of a job!)
It was the first time I ever built a miniature. Of course, the challenge being to build a mansion in under two hours using nothing but highly flammable components. The whole thing was built from thin cardboard wallpapered with paper towels using rubber cement. For the climbing ivy, I spray-painted dryer lint!
