This Screwed-Up House - Back to Introduction.

Remember this mess? It took three days and four people to get all this cleared out. My moment of utter amazement was that the ceramic tile floor beneath what was literally a ton of molds remained undamaged. Then again, I know for a fact that Mr. Bullfeathers was not the one who installed the tile floor.

Before the molds came, this room had a Native American
theme... a theme which apparently requires lots of dead animals to be nailed
to the walls. Now, I've heard plenty of Mr. Bullfeather's stories about being some great hunter. I also heard about his planning to take down a wild boar with pellets. While I know little about guns, I do know a thing or two about wild boars. Spraying them with pellets does nothing more than piss them off. Hmmm... too bad he didn't actually attempt it. That would have saved us a lot of trouble if a boar would have had at him. But chances are, all these pelts and heads were either road-kill or someone else's discarded trophies that Mr. Bullfeathers took credit for. The only animals I've ever been able to confirm that he'd killed were tied up and helpless. (That would be his solution for unwanted pets.) |
| My love for good wooden furniture is no secret, so I about
screamed when we uncovered this teakwood wall unit. To be fair, I knew it was buried under there somewhere. I just hate seeing the damage that was done to it. You can't see it in the photo, but there's a bit of water damage on the ceiling as well. I'm not sure I want to know what the story behind that is. |

The presence of a fireplace is what absolutely slated this
room to become a home library as far as I am concerned.
The trouble is that I'm not exactly sure how I am going to get these pelts and feathers down as they are apparently nailed to the brickwork. I have a sneaky suspicion that re-facing the fireplace is going to be put on the "to do" list for this room. |
| Oh, what a beautiful view... oh yeah, these windows haven't
been cleaned in many moons. Fortunately, I won't have to deal with this mess. The windows are being taken out of the picture completely in favor of wall-to-wall bookshelves. |

3/10/06 Instead of just walling up the windows, my demented muse whispered that the space would make a place for a built-in bookshelf. Since one of my ferrets has a particular fondness for "reorganizing" books, keeping paperbacks out of her reach was an appealing idea. So I started by removing all the window dressing hardware and painting the walls with a sponge-dappled burgundy and garnet. Then using textured vinyl wallpaper I found lying around, I covered those horrible windows. The fun part was discovering that no two panes of glass were the same measurement, hence the overlap on the paper. Unfortunately, I can't blame Mr. Bullfeathers for that since he didn't actually build the house itself. |
| Then I started building the shelves inside the window sill
after painting the vinyl in a matching burgundy. The shelves themselves were
done in a mahogany brown. I know it looks a little psychedelic right now with the wallpaper glowing from the sunlight outside, but that will change in a few weeks. Right now that wall leads directly outside (We bulldozed the other room, remember?) but the new guest room and spa is now under construction and the windows will be drywalled-over as soon as it is ready to be decorated. The next stage of this particular room will be figuring out a furniture plan and installing ferret gates. |

The bookshelf is now fully loaded. |
