Outdoor Dining Room

This is actually a woeful tale of the importance of measuring...

Mom found this gazebo on sale at a home improvement store, and seeing how there is a lot of standing water around which breeds mosquitoes, she decided having a screened-in area near the grill would be great for summer picnics.

So this is where it was supposed to go. On the deck, with one of the doors opening to it, right near where Duckie keeps his herb garden and grill.

We even measured to make sure it wouldn't be too wide and overlap the deck itself.

Unfortunately, we failed to take the overhang on the roof into consideration. So when the day came to set everything up, we realised it wouldn't be possible without hacking away at the roof!

So Garith came up with a solution and set about designing a platform on which to set the gazebo. Then he and Duckie spent a weekend building it.

This actually worked out better for everyone. Not only did we have a better view and a place to put my old kitchen table, but Mom got to get one of those outdoor carpets she'd been eyeing when she first bought the gazebo.

The inside is lit only by hanging candle lanterns and oil lamps.  We put vinyl on the floor to make it easier to clean since we do a lot of dining out here, and Mom has been rediscovering the joys of gardening and started adding foliage in here as well.

This was my little contribution to the room. I call it "Hurricane Insurance".

I had quite a few large brass statues of various Eastern deities that I wasn't sure what I was going to do with.  Now I have one in each corner of the gazebo: Saraswati, Ganesh, Green Tara, and of course, Lord Shiva.

The stick-and-twine thing above the Green Tara statue is something I literally tied together during a  "do-nothing" day that I use for tealight candles. It never quite went with any of my other decor, but Duckie liked it so I didn't toss it out. It now works rather nicely in here.
