The Heartbreak Garage

Last updated - March 25, 2006

I've dubbed this room the "Heartbreak Garage" because of the many neglected and destroyed items we've uncovered in here. It seems that Mr. Bullfeathers liked to keep the "handyman" image by buying lots of expensive tools and whatnot, which he'd take outside to play with and then leave outside... for years. We've uncovered many tools that would have been very useful had they not been covered with many years of rust and crumbled in our hands.

But by far, the biggest heartbreak has been this once-beautiful upright piano. Garith got a little excited at first, thinking maybe it had just been shoved in the corner and forgotten so a restoration effort might bare fruit.

Wrong.

We were informed that Mr. Bullfeathers decided that this antique piano would best serve if it was gutted and turned into a bar. That's right, a bar.

And even as screwed up as that is, he kept to his trademark start-but-don't-finish approach by ripping out the keyboard and floor pedals, but leaving the extremely heavy innards intact. As I write this, we're still trying to figure out how we are going to move this 800+ pound beast.

Unable to salvage it as a piano, I have a feeling this is going to turn into a very ornate supply storage unit once we get it moved away from the wall we have to rebuild. (And of course, it had to be placed right by a screened "wall" leading outside.)

Here's Garith taking down all the plastic and boards so that we can build a better wall in this room.

Our Spider Death Toll sheet increased a bit on this day, as there were cobwebs everywhere and some still had residents.

On top of that, we never knew what we were going to run into or what might be hiding in the many water-damaged and dilapidated boards and boxes that were all over the place.

But I am pleased to say that we found a small treasure. Due to some miraculous oversight, Mr. Bullfeathers failed to leave this chainsaw out in the yard and it was found in its like-new case, oiled, and in great condition.

This was a moment to celebrate, since we'd been talking about how we needed to get a chainsaw for the outdoor work that needs to be tended to.

Here you can also see one of our supervisors, Lost Girl the cat, who isn't happy about losing some of her favorite lounging areas.

More fun here. The floor is water damaged and crumbling to the touch.

And my favorite part of the day was putting Operation Tetanus into effect. We found a 10-lb box of large nails that was so deteriorated that the box would have come apart if we tried to lift it. So I had to pull out all the rusted nails by (gloved) hand and see if I could salvage any of them for rebuilding shelving. We got maybe 4 pounds of usable nails out of the deal.

Meanwhile Garith was having entirely too much fun attacking things with a crowbar.

You just knew this was coming - another 900+ molds that need to be moved to the outside storage barn.

This small area is slated to become a craft storage area for paints and whatnot.

The scariest door in the house. This leads to the attic, which so far we've been trying to pretend does not exist. Eventually we'll have to brave it...
