Dining Room

Getting this room in shape quickly was a high priority for me because I absolutely loathe eating in front of a television. Since I generally spend half my week working on this house, I insisted that we get the dining room cleared out as soon as possible. Besides, I missed using my large table which I had brought here for safe-keeping during the Florida hurricanes.

So after getting all the shelving down and patching up any drywall damage, it took about 2 full days to get the cosmetic work done in this room.

Meet Scarlet, the resident parrot who eventually is going to be moved into the Living Room. Scarlet was another one of Mr. Bullfeather's brag-about toys that he quickly grew tired of and neglected... although he'd be the first to tell you he was the proud owner of a "rare" exotic bird.

We've been working with Scarlet in our free time, which is really funny because no one other than Duckie has any real previous experience with birds and we've read that scarlet macaws are the most aggressive and difficult parrots to handle.

The sad thing is, she really does want to be friendly and lovable, but she's also pretty wild and unaccustomed to being handled. Not to mention she's very loud.

The first thing I did in here was do a faux marble finish on the ceiling. This meant several hours leaning over backwards without the benefit of scaffolding... fun fun fun!

But I wanted to take advantage of having a formal dining room that allowed me to do the ceiling without having to keep the color consistent with the rest of the house. We're going for a bit on an eclectic theme in here, given the rich wooden furnishings and knick-knack oddities that will be shown off in the cabinets.

The walls were ragged with two different shades of blue, and the crown molding painted gold.

We still have to swap out the overhead light for a large dragon hanging lamp I have. And of course, Scarlet will be moved soon in favor of a buffet table that matches the china cabinet that is buried somewhere else in the house right now.

Lots of big cat patterns in here, so I'm leaning towards keeping with that pattern for the textiles that will eventually drape the windows and doorways.

Stay tuned as this room nears completion!
