The home office needed to be blue. We have a kind of Masque of the Red Death thing going on with every room being a different main color. So, with Vincent Price in mind, we dedicated the office to The Abominable Dr. Phibes.

If you aren't familiar with the 1971 movie
The Abominable Dr. Phibes, you probably won't get many of the references
here. This room has just been a really fun
challenge. Since it is inspired by a very specific movie, the goal was to
incorporate as many details from the film into the design as possible. The desk became the infamous red organ, crowned by the brass unicorn with a bloody horn. |
| For the cage of
bats, I decided to be a little whimsical. I love bats, and so I often get them as gifts and then always pick one up every year for Halloween. So instead of going with the realistic approach, I decided to play with my toys. The cage was something my mother gave me a while back that I really didn't know what I was going to use it for. Funny how things all seem to come together in the end. Around the top of each wall is the wavy art-deco style border which was cut out of felt and then stamped in gold. |

The curse of blood was a simple matter of obtaining some bottled water and a plastic mask. A little gauze and red food coloring, and the curse was complete. |
| My mother, with
her uncanny sense of timing, picked up the ceramic mold for this before I'd
even told her what I was thinking about doing to this room. And so the dilemma on how to represent the Darkness was solved. |
