Bohemian Living Room

(Above) My three ladies, made by mounting plain plastic masks on velvet-covered boards and decorating them with fabric, sequins, and other odds-n-ends.

We have an awful lot of original artwork in our home. I read somewhere that some galleries paint their walls red because it is a great color to use for displaying art.

The idea of using red was scary at first, and I know it raised a few eyebrows when I announced I would be painting the walls in that color. But the end results made it all worth it.

Still needing a theme, I knew it was going to have to be a very eclectic room. This room was greatly inspired by the film Moulin Rouge.

One of the most unusual and frequently talked-about pieces in this room is the chaise lounge that was originally a dentist chair from the 1940s.

Duckie brought it home one day and left it in our carport for about a year. Finally I decided that if he wasn't going to do anything with it, then I would.

The dentist chair was soon joined by an old, faded antique chair that I dyed to match the decor.

Someday I plan on having it reupholstered in purple velvet, but until then, a quickie dye job will suffice.

Near it you can also see the burgundy and gold trash can I refinished, and a small plastic footstool that I played around with just as a rainy day project.

More fun with antiques...

This rain lamp is older than I am and belonged to my grandmother, and had been in storage for almost 15 years. To breathe some new life into it, I completely gutted it, refinished the gold, and added new flowers.

Imagining that my ferrets would have way too much fun getting caught up in a rain lamp, I opted not to restring it but to add a fringe of blue glass beads along the top instead.

It now serves as a very decorative table lamp without all the messy "rain" oil.

These mannequin torsos were found in a dumpster many, many years ago and desperately needed reconstructive surgery.

After refinishing them in gold, I dressed them up in burlesque-type outfits and used them as end pieces.

I think the statement here is that I had entirely too much free time on my hands while I was putting this room together.

I reupholstered the loveseat in sleek black velvet with purple and burgundy for the pillows.

This was my first attempt at reupholstering, and four years later it is still holding out well.

The ceiling has since changed to black in that time.
